August 2021

Happy start of the school year! We are so excited to be back at Venetia Elementary. My name is Mrs. Lewis and I am your child's school counselor! Once again, we are starting school in a pandemic. This may cause anxiety and nervousness in your child. Check out the resource page for some ideas on how to help your child with these feelings. Our school is using Calm Classroom curriculum this year as a district wide initiative. Calm Classroom is designed to help students with mindfulness.  Mindfulness has been shown to help students improve their  emotional and mental well being. Your teacher may send home or share some guided practices, I encourage you to practice them at home!

Conversation Starters:

- Was it hard to come up with your S.M.A.R.T. goal?

-For what reasons?

-Do you feel you will use this in the future?

-What are other goals you would like to achieve?

This month we are going to be working on Goal Setting.

"Setting goals helps trigger new behaviors, helps guides your focus and helps you sustain that momentum in life. Goals also help align your focus and promote a sense of self-mastery. In the end, you can’t manage what you don’t measure and you can’t improve upon something that you don’t properly manage"- Positive Psychology

What are S.M.A.R.T. Goals? Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based. Students this month learned that goals should be created in this format in order to keep them organized and reachable. Every student came up with at least one goal, whether it was academic or personal. Ask your child what their goal was! Come up with some new goals for the household as well.

Please, reach out if you have any questions.
